Hi all. Please could someone give me their advice/personal experiences etc?

Hi- Im having a huge amount of difficulty expressing myself which as you would expect is causing a lot of problems with communication in life and also affecting my work life. How do I gain the skills of expressing myself and getting a point across?


Would be nice maybe to talk to someone older than me who has life experience and know where Im coming from etc.. So if anyone would give me some advice/tips I would appreciate it very much as im going through a tough time at the moment and need some advice to get my life back on track and to get some help with it all..

Hi Emily - in cases like this, it really depends on what you mean by difficulty expressing...





1) if you mean you want to, and you have the desire to, but you can't seem to find the words or the words can't come fast enough... there is a condition called ';expressive language disorder'; and a few sessions with a speech therapist can provide a world of difference.





2) if you mean you bottle it all up inside, choosing not to express yourself even though you have thoughts and feelings that you'd like to share - a licensed clinical therapist can also help you make significant progress. Sometimes medications can help this too, but I would always recommend a clinical therapist first and then get their opinion as to whether or not medication might be helpful.





Regardless, you can certainly start with written expression - you did a great job communicating your difficulty with your question today. If writing down your thoughts/feelings or even just ideas or general communications is comfortable for you, I would suggest you communicate via written language when you have the opportunity - particularly as you work on either #1 or #2 above.

hiya, erm i found it hard to acknoweledge my feelings so ive made little mood cards with both positive and negative feelings on. such as anger,happy,determined,scared,nervous ect. just go through each one,one by one and try relise how each word makes you feel and everything around it. i know this isnt going to get a point across but can help you understand feels your self. x
were you able to communicate well has something happened which is affecting this aspect


if this is depression related do all of this even if its not this wil help you





All treatment recommended by the doctors should be tested and approved and quite rightly so.


That makes sense right Obviously it costs vast sums of money to test and approve treatments because of the possible damage to people and the subsequent litigation costing millions of pounds.

When you say 'expressing yourself' do you mean the vocabulary? Or are we talking low self esteem? It might help you to list the points you wish to express in Word, then go back and reduce the number of words to make each issue clearer and more concise. The positive thing about tough times is that they allow us to develop our coping skills and give us experience so when we encounter our next difficulty you cope better with it. Have you maybe considered asking your GP for a referral for Counselling? It can be very useful in helping you focus on issues that need resolving, and find resolutions with gentle guidance. I wish you better emotional health. :0)
You have expressed yourself very well in this question and how did you do that? You sat down, you thought and you wrote. It's the same in verbal communication only it can be harder for many reasons. Firstly, if you speak to someone in the most boring and monotonous tone, they become less prone to listen, and if you do not express your point clearly and quickly, people become bored.


Try practicing modulation of your voice. Add some expression and do not worry about taking time to think through a communication before making it. Also, it is very important to listen to the other persons point. You must have interest or intention to hear before you can understand, and you must also have the intention of being heard before speaking. It's also interesting to note that people tend to have different 'social' attitudes. Some people are always bright and enthusiastic and some are always angry and some are always bored etc. You will notice that if you talk to an angry person in the same tone he is using with you, you get a more effective communication! And the same goes with all attitudes. It also follows that if you can 'spot' someones social attitude and adopt it, then raise it slightly, you can raise the quality of both of your communications. But obviously it requires practice!


Start by listening more and thinking before responding, just like you did when you wrote this. Then note the tone of your voice when speaking to others. Speak clearly and with intention, and look out for the points i made above to see if you can develop your skills in communication.
well emily x i was somewhat like you for a long time. i didn't speak my opinion, i let people like my boss at the time and co-workers talk to me anyway they chose, and i was always carefull not to ';upset'; anybody, god forbid someone not like me or think i were stupid and insignificant. the only thing i can tell you is you're gonna have to realize that you're a human being just like them, you have feelings and emotions just like them. and if that doesn't work you're just gonna have to learn to say ';fu*K that mother fu*cker he/she can kiss my @ss and i don't care what they think im gonna speak my peace!
